{"id":1000,"date":"2007-07-07T18:20:44","date_gmt":"2007-07-07T22:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=1000"},"modified":"2007-07-07T18:20:44","modified_gmt":"2007-07-07T22:20:44","slug":"appearing-in-chicago-on-education-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=1000","title":{"rendered":"Appearing in Chicago on education policy&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On August 3 and 4, I&#8217;m talking in the Hyatt McCormick Place Convention Center at <a href=\"http:\/\/yearlykosconvention.org\/\">YearlyKos<\/a>, the convention sprout of partisan <a href=\"http:\/\/dailykos.com\">DailyKos<\/a>, on the panels <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yearlykosconvention.org\/node\/139\">Education Uprising: Education for Democracy<\/a> (Friday afternoon, 1-2:15) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yearlykosconvention.org\/node\/150\">Rethinking Educational Accountability<\/a> (Saturday morning, 10:30-11:30). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/storyonly\/2007\/6\/23\/6659\/73085\">Both<\/a> are substantially the logistical work of <a href=\"http:\/\/teacherken.dailykos.com\/\">teacherken<\/a>, a fellow Haverford College graduate, an active blogger at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\">DailyKos<\/a>, and a teacher in Virginia. He has wrangled the opportunity and has been herding a bunch of cats for the last seven months.<\/p>\n<p>The first panel comes from an ambigious set of DKos diarists who set about to &#8230; rethink education. I promised to (and did, with some effort) complete some initial diaries on the history of education as an initial perspective. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/tag\/Education%20UpRising\">Following entries<\/a>&nbsp;are partially divergent in approaches to education reform, but they are sufficiently interesting and&#8230; humanistic &#8230; to justify the panel. (See reference to teacherken&#8217;s herding cats above.)<\/p>\n<p>The second panel includes teacherken, me, and Doug Christensen, Nebraska&#8217;s Commissioner of Education. Christensen battled with the U.S. Department of Education to allow Nebraska to use a set of locally-developed tests for NCLB purposes.
