{"id":1187,"date":"2008-01-23T10:54:22","date_gmt":"2008-01-23T14:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=1187"},"modified":"2008-01-23T10:54:22","modified_gmt":"2008-01-23T14:54:22","slug":"value-added-with-botulism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=1187","title":{"rendered":"Value-added, with botulism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before Kevin Carey proclaims that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quickanded.com\/2008\/01\/value-added-comes-of-age.html\">value-added [method] comes of age<\/a>, he might want to read <a href=\"http:\/\/edwize.org\/the-real-true-facts-behind-the-doe-teacher-value-added-project\">the real true facts behind the New York City teacher value-added project<\/a>, wherein we learn that the city&#8217;s great statistical experts thought three children were enough of a sample on which to base a teacher evaluation, or maybe <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edweek.org\/edweek\/eduwonkette\/2008\/01\/its_our_secret_the_nyc_teacher.html\">the ethical problems with the NYC project<\/a>, or maybe even my comments on value-added or growth measures in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shermandorn.com\/Accountability-Frankenstein.html\">Accountability Frankenstein<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>No matter what else you can say about growth measures, NYC&#8217;s project is about the worst example I can imagine to use if one wanted to push the approach. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Update I<\/strong>: Carey responds in his post:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It might [have methodological problems, in NYC], I don&#8217;t know, I guess we&#8217;ll find out. But, per above, methodological issues can be worked out, and anyone who thinks the hysterical reaction to the value-added initiative stems from a deep and abiding concern for statistical integrity is willfully not paying attention.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The claim that &#8220;methodological issues can be worked out&#8221; is evidence that Carey hasn&#8217;t read the writings of professional researchers who point out that growth models are no holy grail. I am one of those who have written about the difficulties <em>inherent<\/em> in growth models, but certainly not the only one. <\/p>\n<p>And my response isn&#8217;t hysterical; it&#8217;s simply disgusted with the latest shenanigans from Tweed.
