{"id":1362,"date":"2008-06-11T11:18:50","date_gmt":"2008-06-11T15:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=1362"},"modified":"2008-06-11T11:18:50","modified_gmt":"2008-06-11T15:18:50","slug":"the-politics-of-education-platforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=1362","title":{"rendered":"The politics of education platforms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=''><a href=\"http:\/\/edwize.org\/obama-catch-this-softball-the-centerleft-counter-attack-on-education-policy\">Steve Diamond<\/a><br \/>\nis right: the public pronouncements of sweeping education approaches<br \/>\nare all about a &#8220;battle for the soul of Barack Obama on education<br \/>\npolicy.&#8221; That is true whether you&#8217;re talking about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boldapproach.org\/\">Bolder Approach<\/a> announcement Monday, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/ny_local\/education\/2008\/06\/10\/2008-06-10_schools_chancellor_klein_rev_al_sharpton.html\">Klein-Sharpton alliance <\/a>that will be announced today, or what have you. (<a href=\"http:\/\/edin08.org\/\">Ed in &#8217;08<\/a> counts, though it is technically nonpartisan: It has consistently wanted to influence <i>all<\/i> candidates.)<\/p>\n<p>All the attacks this spring on Obama&#8217;s links to Bill Ayers and Linda Darling-Hammond are<br \/>\nboth partisan (when Republicans try to pile on in hopes of finding<br \/>\nsomething that will stick as an attack in the fall, as with Ayers) and<br \/>\ninfluence-seeking in a sideways fashion, trying to peel away potential<br \/>\nsources of influence (as with attacks on Darling-Hammond). <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m<br \/>\nstill going to comment on the EPI collaboration when I get time, and<br \/>\nprobably the Klein-Sharpton potpourri as well, but for now, there are<br \/>\ntwo parts of these attempts that seem self-defeating in some way:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If<br \/>\nyou think Barack Obama is a blank slate who&#8217;s easily swayed on either<br \/>\npolicy or rhetoric, you haven&#8217;t been paying attention to the nomination<br \/>\nprocess. <\/li>\n<li>In practice, the most important decisions on<br \/>\neducation policy will be appointments to transition task forces and<br \/>\npolitical appointees to the USDOE and the relevant White House advising<br \/>\noffices. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More importantly, I will draft an Instantly Coopting<br \/>\nEveryone: Duh, You Octagonal Usurper (ICED YOU) statement that will<br \/>\nbeat all of the efforts at inter-<del>ego<\/del>organizational statement-drafting. This statement will be superior because I have actually <i>listened<\/i><br \/>\nto Obama a few times and because the statement will have one thing that<br \/>\nis missing from all other attempts at the Uber Education Statement Du Jour<br \/>\n(UESDJ, an unpronounceable acronym and therefore inferior): a sense of<br \/>\nhumor.
