{"id":1366,"date":"2008-06-16T16:45:41","date_gmt":"2008-06-16T20:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=1366"},"modified":"2008-06-16T16:45:41","modified_gmt":"2008-06-16T20:45:41","slug":"floridas-draft-social-studies-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=1366","title":{"rendered":"Florida&#8217;s draft social studies standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Florida Department of Education staff have kindly sent me a text version of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shermandorn.com\/mt\/archives\/Draft FLorida Social Studies Standards.xls\">draft social studies standards for Florida<\/a> (XLS), which I have reworked into an Excel spreadsheet with two versions, one sorted by discipline and standard and another sorted by grade level. (Note: to do the sorting, I had to create standard codes. These are <strong>NOT<\/strong> codes created by the state education department.)<\/p>\n<p>The draft standards are&#8230; long, with 931 &#8220;benchmarks.&#8221; Some of the new stuff is good (primary-source documents), but a bunch of the details as well as the general organization worry me a great deal. (For example, the third-grade benchmarks in world history treat history as cultural tourism. I know a French historian who thought that as a grad student, but it trivializes history.)
