{"id":1617,"date":"2009-04-27T13:26:18","date_gmt":"2009-04-27T17:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=1617"},"modified":"2009-04-27T13:26:18","modified_gmt":"2009-04-27T17:26:18","slug":"pcast-mostly-very-good-except-for-rensselauers-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=1617","title":{"rendered":"PCAST, mostly very good except for Rensselauer&#8217;s president"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, the White House announced <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/news\/article\/6385\/obama-names-members-to-council-of-advisors-on-science-and-technology\">President Obama&#8217;s picks for the President&#8217;s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST)<\/a>, and with one exception, they look great to me.<\/p>\n<p>The exception is Shirley Ann Jackson, whose scientific reputation is fine but whose administration of Rensselaur Polytechnic Institute is rife with signs of problems, from the close <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2006\/04\/28\/rpi\">vote of no confidence in 2006<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2007\/08\/08\/rpi\">dismissal of the faculty senate in 2007<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2008\/08\/11\/rpi\">stripping a professor emeritus of e-mail privileges<\/a>, and (just discovered a few months ago) the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2009\/01\/26\/rpi\">provision of a second home in the Adirondacks <\/a>for her at a time when RPI was laying off dozens of staff members.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think that PCAST&#8217;s reputation is well-served by one of the poster children for administrative arrogance in higher ed.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today, the White House announced President Obama&#8217;s picks for the President&#8217;s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), and with one exception, they look great to me.
