{"id":2484,"date":"2010-09-22T14:21:17","date_gmt":"2010-09-22T18:21:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=2484"},"modified":"2010-09-22T12:21:51","modified_gmt":"2010-09-22T16:21:51","slug":"a-little-bit-of-sanity-in-florida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=2484","title":{"rendered":"A little bit of sanity in Florida"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Florida today, <a href=\"http:\/\/miamiherald.typepad.com\/nakedpolitics\/2010\/09\/appeals-court-agrees-gay-adoption-ban-is-unconstitutional.html\">an appeals court upheld a lower-court decision ruling<\/a> that Florida&#39;s statutory ban on gays and lesbians adopting children was unconstitutional. This will head up to the state supreme court, and I don&#39;t know how they&#39;ll rule, but I hope the ruling is upheld and the ban overturned. That would be good both for adopting parents and the children who will be adopted because there are more parents who <em>can<\/em> adopt them.<\/p>\n<p>If you think this only affects gay and lesbian couples, you should know differently: Because Florida&#39;s family law does not follow a <em>best interests of the child<\/em> standard, couples in other states are sometimes told that Florida adoption is a complicated thing. I know a straight couple in another state who chose an international adoption in part because their lawyer warned them against adopting in Florida: a biological parent could seek to overturn the adoption on a number of grounds.
