Just a brief note this morning on the headline in Florida: Rick Scott announced his transition team in education yesterday, and the headline almost everywhere was about one member of the team: Michelle Rhee. <\/p>\n

Controversial education reformer Michelle Rhee was named to Gov.-elect Rick Scott's education transition team Thursday, fueling rumors that she may become Florida's next education commissioner<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Sherman: Not likely. As reporters have noted, Rhee would have a much harder commute from Sacramento to Tallahassee than Sacramento to D.C. And Eric Smith is generally appreciated in the state as a much more focused and approachable figure than previous commissioners elected or appointed under Jeb Bush. But there is a point to the naming of Rhee. <\/p>\n

Such a grouping hints at the ferment under way in public education…<\/em><\/p>\n

If you look at the list apart from Rhee, they're generally in-state players. But name Michelle Rhee, and all attention is on Rick Scott as someone with an eye on national conversations. Remember: Jeb Bush's education summit was just in the last week. What would have happened if Scott hadn't<\/em> appointed Rhee? In most circumstances this would have been portrayed as the Jeb 2 team on education. <\/p>\n

What we know about Rick Scott is that he has a healthy ego. (Generally, people who run for governor of a large state are not shrinking violets.) His blow-up over Obama's turnaround on Gulf oil drilling was as much about not being notified as the substance. I suspect he will definitely enjoy the national attention this brings for a day or two, and this may be an indirect signal that while he is a conservative Republican, he will make up his own mind about his preferred education policy, thank you very much. <\/p>\n

(Apart from her experience out of state, I'm not sure that Rhee would be bringing much different to the table from the other members of the team. The bulk of the state has signed onto RTTT plans that the state has approved, and the other matters of contention when she was in DC are not really state policy issues. I can see where someone with a national perspective is important, but even if Scott had intentions of maneuvering Smith out and Rhee in, it's not clear what would necessarily change.) <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
