The sloppily-written so-called <a href=\"http:\/\/studentsforacademicfreedom.org\/abor.html\">Academic Bill of Rights<\/a> (ABOR) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palmbeachpost.com\/politics\/content\/news\/epaper\/2005\/03\/08\/m1a_freespeech_0308.html\">has been introduced in the Florida legislature<\/a> as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myfloridahouse.gov\/bills_detail.aspx?Id=16495&#038;sBillNumberText=837&#038;iSessionSelectedIndex=0&#038;iChamberSelectedIndex=2\">House Bill 837<\/a>&#151;something I need to write about, given my views about faculty needing to advocate for universities.  For now, I will just note that the introduced bill omits the provision of the ABOR about legislators&#8217; not meddling in curriculum!<br \/>\nDo students have a right to academic freedom?  Of course.  The ABOR doesn&#8217;t touch issues on private universities, but LeMoyne College has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/03\/10\/nyregion\/10paddle.html?ex=1268197200&#038;en=96d18b0be5f6f675&#038;ei=5088&#038;partner=rssnyt\">dismissed a student for advocating corporal punishment in schools<\/a>, presumably because my teacher-education counterparts there believed that the A- paper indicated he couldn&#8217;t follow state law forbidding corporal punishment.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefire.org\/index.php\/article\/5303.html\">FIRE has gotten involved in this case<\/a>, and they&#8217;re right.
