{"id":291,"date":"2005-03-18T19:40:03","date_gmt":"2005-03-18T23:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=291"},"modified":"2005-03-18T19:40:03","modified_gmt":"2005-03-18T23:40:03","slug":"move-over-ward-churchill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=291","title":{"rendered":"Move over, Ward Churchill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2005\/EDUCATION\/03\/18\/churchill.quotes.ap\/index.html\">portions of Churchill&#8217;s interview comments at CNN<\/a>, I have one reaction:  move over, poster boy, and let us professionals do the heavy lifting to defend academe.  An example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Look, man, I riveted the entire nation on&#151;what did I rivet the entire nation&#8217;s attention on? It&#8217;s just boilerplate now &#8230; there&#8217;s no analysis of the content of what I said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My gut instinct is that this statement shows either a blithe ability to ignore the world of academic criticism or blithe disingenuousness.  There <strong>has<\/strong> been analysis of Ward&#8217;s writings on the subject, my current favorite being Mark Grimsley&#8217;s (<a href=\"http:\/\/warhistorian.blogspot.com\/2005\/02\/little-eichmanns-part-i.html\">part I<\/a> ,<a href=\"http:\/\/warhistorian.blogspot.com\/2005\/02\/little-eichmanns-part-ii.html\">part II<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/warhistorian.blogspot.com\/2005\/02\/little-eichmanns-part-iii.html\">part III<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/warhistorian.blogspot.com\/2005\/02\/little-eichmanns-part-iv.html\">part IV<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/warhistorian.blogspot.com\/2005\/02\/little-eichmanns-part-v.html\">part V<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/warhistorian.blogspot.com\/2005\/02\/e-little-eichmanns-part-vi.html\">part VI<\/a>, and his <a href=\"http:\/\/hnn.us\/blogs\/entries\/10748.html\">broader comments on l&#8217;affaire Churchill<\/a>).  If he had wanted to talk about the value of his writings, he could point to other writings with some self-deprecation and express some delight that at least the controversy has led to a reexamination of  the basic ideas in the hands of academics with diverse views.  But, no&#151;at least as reported by CNN, he may be glorifying in the academic-freedom martyr role.
