{"id":300,"date":"2005-04-08T08:00:36","date_gmt":"2005-04-08T12:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=300"},"modified":"2005-04-08T08:00:36","modified_gmt":"2005-04-08T12:00:36","slug":"in-print-on-hb-837","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=300","title":{"rendered":"In print on HB 837"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Plenty of stories in the last two days in Florida have focused on the hearing Tuesday at the House Education Council in the University of Florida student newspaper, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alligator.org\/pt2\/050406baxley.php\">Alligator<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palmbeachpost.com\/politics\/content\/news\/epaper\/2005\/04\/06\/a12a_academia_0406.html\">Palm Beach Post<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/mld\/tallahassee\/news\/politics\/11320275.htm\">Tallahassee Democrat<\/a>, and several papers using the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-journalonline.com\/NewsJournalOnline\/News\/Politics\/Leg\/03PoliticsLEG03040605.htm\">Associated Press feed<\/a>.  The most interesting is a piece in the St. Pete Times that one of the professors accused of bias in Tuesday&#8217;s hearing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sptimes.com\/2005\/04\/07\/State\/Support_of_terror_cal.shtml\">says it&#8217;s a lie<\/a>  (The point is not that I automatically believe the faculty member but that Horowitz and his allies automatically believe student complaints.)  Several stories (in the Gainesville Sun on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gainesville.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20050406\/LOCAL\/204060316&#038;SearchID=73204432651252\">April 6<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gainesville.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20050407\/LOCAL\/204070349&#038;SearchID=73204432651252\">April 7<\/a>, among other places) suggest the bill would never pass the Senate, may not even pass the House, and would get vetoed by Governor Bush.  David Horowitz&#8217;s online outlet <a href=\"http:\/\/frontpagemag.com\/Articles\/ReadArticle.asp?ID=17638\">boasted that the governor called Horowitz a freedom fighter<\/a>.  Ah, well&#151;if a very conservative governor won&#8217;t do your bidding, at least point out the kudos.  Baxley will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gainesville.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20050408\/LOCAL\/50407075\/1078\/news\">debate University of Florida graduate student Charles Grapski<\/a> on a Gainesville talk-radio station this afternoon.  Editorials appeared in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sptimes.com\/2005\/04\/07\/Opinion\/Unnecessary_intervent.shtml\">St Pete Times<\/a>, the USF student newspaper, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usforacle.com\/vnews\/display.v\/ART\/2005\/04\/06\/4253e4c349b4a\">The Oracle<\/a>, and even the Rutgers U. student <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alligator.org\/pt2\/050406baxley.php\">Daily Targum<\/a>.<br \/>\nOn the satirical side, there&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tallahassee.com\/mld\/democrat\/news\/opinion\/11337622.htm\">North Florida Flat Earth Society&#8217;s award<\/a> to bill sponsor Dennis Baxley as well as a letter to the U. Florida student newspaper <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alligator.org\/pt2\/050408letter2.php\">thanking Baxley and other conservatives<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sptimes.com\/2005\/04\/07\/Columns\/Eh__facts__schmacts__.shtml\">Howard Troxler&#8217;s April 7 column<\/a> in the St. Petersburg Times.<br \/>\nAnd I have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palmbeachpost.com\/opinion\/content\/opinion\/epaper\/2005\/04\/08\/m17a_dorncomment_0408.html\">my piece that appeared in the Palm Beach Post this morning<\/a> (and in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lakelandledger.com\/\">Lakeland Ledger<\/a> over the weekend, though it&#8217;s not online there&#151;thanks to Jim Cebulski for letting me know it was printed there).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plenty of stories in the last two days in Florida have focused on the hearing Tuesday at the House Education Council in the University of Florida student newspaper, the Alligator, the Palm Beach Post, the Tallahassee Democrat, and several papers using the Associated Press feed.
