A week ago, this part of Florida saw nine tornadoes on a day of severe thunderstorms, and only a small part of my T-Th morning class came. This Tuesday, another line of severe thunderstorms in the morning. As a result, because students reasonable decided not to risk their life for my class, we're a little behind on material. Some of my students this semester told me point-blank they want me lecturing more. I guess we're forced into a bit of it thanks to the weather. So… time to try out the new Panoprofcity or something like that. <\/p>\n
My conclusion: it's certainly easy to talk to the computer and have the computer record it. As a result, it's very easy to record yourself in The Dullest Lecture Ever. I certainly hope I don't sound as boring and as stilted in class as I do recording something with no audience, no interaction, just a microphone and the list of department phone numbers staring back at me. I think that to make this work for me, I'll need a live studio audience. Anyone want to buy tickets? <\/p>\n
The desire for an audience is probably not just my anxiety and displeasure about recording something alone (and having my office phone interrupt the recording!). Thus far, it looks like the academic podcasts I enjoy most are either recordings of live classes\/presentations or set pieces done once or twice a month. The live performances make sense; Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegone podcast monologues<\/a> are just snippets of the shows recorded live. The monthly or bimonthly set pieces can either be polished (as in BackStory Radio<\/a>, which is covering the Civil War right now) or roughly-hewn (as in Digital Campus<\/a>), but in general they involve interaction among multiple hosts. In other words, good podcasts are recorded conversations, not generally monologues.
