Since I have known a number of special educators whose students had troubling and violent behavior, I sympathize with this poor teacher. I&#39;ve met students who have hit teachers and fellow students as well as destroyed furniture and other property (though not at the time I was visiting), whose teachers sometimes explain why they don&#39;t push for upgraded classroom computers with a wry grin. (Let&#39;s just say that ruggedized computers come at a premium price.)<\/p>\n<p>Most behavior problems pale in comparison with the events apparently recorded by the video: relatively few students (especially elementary-aged children) throw furniture at school, break windows, or attack teachers or other adults. But some do. The challenge is to address the educational rights of those students while protecting the rest of the school environment. The teacher who created the video obviously feels the school&#39;s leadership has taken insufficient steps to safeguard teachers and other students. And that may be the case; I know of one school where a student attack on a universally-loved aide drop-kicked everyone&#39;s morale for the next year or more, in large part because of the school leadership&#39;s passivity. But it is sometimes hard to tell where the problem is and likely solutions might be.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One starting place: the national technical assistance center for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbis.org\/\">positive behavior support<\/a>.&nbsp;If you know a teacher or a parent who needs assistance with troubling behavior, I strongly recommend the website.
