Lots of complicated results, largely because education politics are complicated. Parents are far more likely to like the schools their children attend than to approve of schools nationwide. The country is split on attitudes towards teachers unions, though they apparently like the teachers who join unions and are far closer to union views on pay composition than the general public is to reformy types who want pay to be separate from experience and advanced degrees. ((Alexander Russo gets credit in my book for spreading the term <em>reformy<\/em>. Far more successful than <em>standardisto, The Blob<\/em>,\u00a0and other attempted labels. If you ever have to pick someone to attach a humiliating nickname to me, I&#8217;d suggest Russo.)) And though there is a powerful cultural script about what a &#8220;real school&#8221; is, ((Cf: Mary Heywood Metz, &#8220;Real School: A Universal Drama amid Disparate Experience,&#8221; <em>Politics of Education Association Yearbook<\/em> 1989, 75-91.)) poll respondents also are more likely to want teachers to have more flexibility in curriculum than what you will see in some districts&#8217; pacing calendars and than many might assume.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: anyone tell you &#8220;all parents&#8221; or &#8220;all Americans&#8221; think anything on schools, don&#8217;t believe it.
