Congratulations, you have earned the Jejune badge<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I have watched the discussion of the Mozilla <a href=\"http:\/\/openbadges.org\">Open Badges project<\/a> and this year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/hastac.org\/blogs\/cathy-davidson\/2011\/09\/16\/why-badges-why-not\">Digital Media and Learning Competition<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/dmlcompetition.net\/Competition\/4\/badges-competition-cfp.php\">badges competition<\/a> with some interest and a little skepticism about this and other <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quickanded.com\/2011\/05\/we-do-in-fact-need-some-non-stinking-badges.html\">proposed fragmented &#8220;gamification&#8221; of higher education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out the Digital Campus podcast crew <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcampus.tv\/2011\/09\/19\/episode-74-tin-badge-for-the-authors-guild\/\">are even more skeptical<\/a>. I forget who on this week&#8217;s podcast pointed out that the further fragmentation of knowledge is the opposite of the ideal at-least-somewhat-integrative college experience. ((<strong>Update<\/strong>: Amanda French says it was <a href=\"http:\/\/foundhistory.org\">Tom Scheinfeldt<\/a>.)) Good point, and I wish I had thought of it first! \u00a0But here&#8217;s something the Digital Campus crew didn&#8217;t think of: a self-breaking badge.<\/p>\n<p>At the top of this entry is the first and probably only gamified education badge that you can earn primarily by not caring about it one whit. The Jejune badge is earned by anyone who has a sufficiently high level of cynicism to be skeptical that badges will do much of anything for autodidacticism. If you&#8217;re the type of person who doesn&#8217;t really care that you know what <em>jejune<\/em>\u00a0or <em>autodidact<\/em>\u00a0means, you&#8217;ve earned the badge. To commemorate the total lack of meaning, it is a 100&#215;100 pixel gray square with a plain black <strong>J<\/strong>\u00a0in the middle. Feel free to copy it and put it in some inconspicuous place on your third Livejournal entry. C&#8217;mon: you&#8217;ve earned it.
