{"id":4018,"date":"2011-10-29T06:00:03","date_gmt":"2011-10-29T10:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=4018"},"modified":"2011-10-27T19:57:42","modified_gmt":"2011-10-27T23:57:42","slug":"college-loan-proposals-whos-got-recent-graduates-covered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=4018","title":{"rendered":"College loan proposals: who&#8217;s got recent graduates covered?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have rarely timed my writing so well: a few days after <a href=\"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=3963\">I pointed out the obvious<\/a> link between Occupy Wall Street, college-related debt of former students, and the new (and inadequate) income-based repayment program for student loans, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/10\/26\/education\/26debt.html\">president announces changes to the income-based repayment program<\/a> to reduce the debt-overhang burden on recent graduates and current students. As others have pointed out, the changes are incremental, and I suspect the most important effect of the announcement is simple advertisement that it exists, to get more people signed up.<\/p>\n<p>The real solution is something like Kevin Carey&#8217;s proposal for income-based loans, which he advocated in a <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/The-US-Should-Adopt\/129504\/\">Chronicle of Higher Ed column<\/a> this week. With income-based loans, we wouldn&#8217;t have to create loan-forgiveness policies for special-education teachers, rural doctors, etc. \u00a0It would be a general message: <em>Want a college education and then serve the public at low salaries?
