{"id":5233,"date":"2012-08-16T22:00:36","date_gmt":"2012-08-17T02:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=5233"},"modified":"2012-08-16T22:00:36","modified_gmt":"2012-08-17T02:00:36","slug":"o-brave-new-university-that-has-such-moocs-int","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=5233","title":{"rendered":"O brave new university, \/ That has such MOOCs in&#8217;t!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we head into the second half of Hybrid Pedagogy&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/moocmooc.com\/\">MOOC MOOC<\/a>, I thought I&#8217;d talk about the practices, principles, benefits of MOOCs using some of my favorite characters in all of pop culture.<\/p>\n<h4>The basic principle: the ultimate learner-centered environment<\/h4>\n<p>The most important thing to understand about Massive Open Online Courses is that they are massive and essentially uncontrollable by teachers. This is wonderful, as it hands control off to the vast majority of participants who are not teachers (n-1, precisely, or n-t).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_9VWxIRIkRc\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>We&#8217;re all individuals! We&#8217;re all different!<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Introduction ice-breakers to start the MOOC<\/h4>\n<p>The most important way to start a MOOC is to have introductions of everyone as an icebreaker. This guy was famous for getting the party started with his question.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Kosh from Babylon 5, who asked, &quot;Who are you?&quot;\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/b\/be\/B5_kosh01b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"166\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Who are you?<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Participant pedagogy<\/h4>\n<p>My favorite part of MOOCs is the welcoming of participant perspectives. The technical term among adult-education researchers is\u00a0<em>andragogy<\/em>, about the orientation around the adult learner, and it&#8217;s captured by one simple question:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Morden, from Babylon 5, who asks &quot;What do you want?&quot;\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/d\/df\/B5_morden.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"166\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>What do you want?<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Opportunities to learn from each other<\/h4>\n<p>A critical part of MOOCs is the establishment of forums for people to learn about important topics from others, especially those with very different perspectives and origins.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oF-AcR14Km8\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Learning through the use of new technology<\/h4>\n<p>What would a MOOC be without the inventive use of technology and the opportunity to learn about the technology through experimentation?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hz65AOjabtM\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Risk-taking<\/h4>\n<p>Finally, the most important principle apart from letting go of control is, of course, the encouragement of risk-taking by participants.
