{"id":656,"date":"2006-07-31T18:35:57","date_gmt":"2006-07-31T22:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=656"},"modified":"2006-07-31T18:35:57","modified_gmt":"2006-07-31T22:35:57","slug":"grading-doggerel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=656","title":{"rendered":"Grading doggerel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/playingschool.blogspot.com\/2006\/07\/each-x-hurts-sunday-grading-rhyme.html\">profgrrl<\/a> inspired me, even though I&#8217;m not teaching this summer:<br \/>\nIn grading some are at their best<br \/>\nbut others can get quite depressed<br \/>\nwhen marking &#8220;wrong&#8221; and sometimes &#8220;right&#8221;<br \/>\nand eat and grade all through the night.<br \/>\n(Halvah&#8217;s great, but M&#038;Ms<br \/>\nfeed the brain cells and the stem.<br \/>\nWhat helps read <em>mensch<\/em> or plain mean jerks?<br \/>\nFor me, just <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theobromine\">theobromine<\/a> works.)<br \/>\nFor those who come from overseas,<br \/>\nculture gap&#8217;s far from a breeze,<br \/>\nthey must think U.S. students nuts,<br \/>\nall pupils who think with their&#8230; lower spines.<br \/>\n(I exaggerate, of course.<br \/>\nWho work as hard as a horse<br \/>\nwill earn high grades and my respect,<br \/>\nbecoming close to the Elect.)<br \/>\nThe homesick blues I&#8217;ve seen in peers?<br \/>\nThe folks who all dissolve in tears?<br \/>\nThe stuff most prone to gradingology?<br \/>\nYep, it&#8217;s paleontology.<br \/>\nSix TAs in a lecture hall<br \/>\nthought it all was just a ball<br \/>\nuntil they had to grade the final.<br \/>\nThen they learned the screaming primal.<br \/>\nSix TAs from overseas<br \/>\nwho though that grad school was a breeze,<br \/>\nwho hadn&#8217;t met their match, quite yet,<br \/>\nBut horrors waited, you can bet.<br \/>\nThey fought through hundreds of exams.<br \/>\nThey read Sue&#8217;s, Al&#8217;s, and even Sam&#8217;s.<br \/>\nThey marked some unreadable text<br \/>\nand purple pictures of T. Rex.<br \/>\nThey <strong>X<\/strong>&#8216;d some here , and cross-hatched there,<br \/>\nand slowly they pulled out their hair.<br \/>\nGreen pen for wrong and blue for right.<br \/>\nAnd red their eyes half through the night.<br \/>\nWhen all was graded, all was done.<br \/>\nThey squinted at the rising sun.<br \/>\nFour were left as psych-job wrecks,<br \/>\nthe other two were just blue Czechs.<a href=\"#asterisk\">*<\/a><br \/>\nPlease treat your TAs kindly, peers,<br \/>\nand don&#8217;t ignore the flowing tears.<br \/>\nTheir organizing&#8217;s not a sin,<br \/>\nso show the grad school union in.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"10%\">\n<a name=\"asterisk\">*<\/a>&#151;profgrrl&#8217;s poem refers to &#8220;blue checks.&#8221;<br \/>\n(And now I&#8217;ll flee with rapid run<br \/>\nfor writing such an awful pun.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>profgrrl inspired me, even though I&#8217;m not teaching this summer: In grading some are at their best but others can get quite depressed when marking &#8220;wrong&#8221; and sometimes &#8220;right&#8221; and eat and grade all through the night.
