I remember being introduced to a wonderful stylist in <em>The Emergence of the New South, 1913-1945<\/em> (1967). When I initially read it, the first chapter (&#8220;In the House of their Fathers&#8221;) was the most subtle and damning indictment of Woodrow Wilson I had ever seen.
