A few clues to the changing political environment in Washington: the theme of the meeting is officially &#8220;The Access Imperative&#8221; though U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings is on the agenda for a plenary session and the plenaries and breakouts are on a variety of topics. Keys to the meeting: which topics are the bailiwick of Terry Hartle (an issues overview the morning of Feb. 10; public-survey data at lunch on Feb. 11; and a mysteriously titled &#8220;Scenes from a Russian Novel&#8221; talk Feb. 12)&nbsp;and which corporations (and nonprofits in a few cases) are sponsoring various events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Korn\/Ferry International<\/li>\n<li>SunGard Higher Education<\/li>\n<li>New York Times<\/li>\n<li>Datatel, Inc.<\/li>\n<li>Fidelity Investments<\/li>\n<li>Witt\/Kieffer<\/li>\n<li>Academic Search, Inc.<\/li>\n<li>Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation<\/li>\n<li>Hewlett Packard<\/li>\n<li>Spencer Stuart<\/li>\n<li>TIAA-CREF Institute<\/li>\n<li>Edward W. It features Barmak Nassirian, one of the sharper folks in the higher-ed world. (Among the breakout sessions, it&#8217;s cross-scheduled against &#8220;Increasing Access in Latin America: Challenges for Reform,&#8221; which has Judy Genshaft, USF&#8217;s president, as moderator. So I say &#8220;definitely consider&#8221; instead of &#8220;just go!&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>Oh, yes, and there are opportunities for presidents, chancellors, and provosts who run or do T&#8217;ai Chi to find fellow morning exercisers.
