{"id":8034,"date":"2015-08-15T10:30:50","date_gmt":"2015-08-15T17:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=8034"},"modified":"2015-08-15T10:30:50","modified_gmt":"2015-08-15T17:30:50","slug":"its-all-about-rebundling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=8034","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s all about (re)bundling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The incipient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2015\/08\/14\/group-seven-major-universities-seeks-offer-online-microcredentials\">University Learning Store<\/a> is a demonstration of why <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aei.org\/publication\/beyond-retrofitting-innovation-in-higher-education\/\">unbundling<\/a>\u00a0is unlikely to be the future of higher education. If I understand the linked\u00a0<em>InsideHigherEd<\/em> article correctly, this is an attempt by seven universities to create an ecosystem of non-credit microcredentials (or badges) that takes advantage of the broader capacity of the collaboration. There are substantial barriers to creating such an ecosystem, including the types of bureaucratic problems that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edcentral.org\/whatever-happened-cbe-experiments\/\">Amy Laitinen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/confessions-community-college-dean\/accelerator-brake-accelerator-brake\">Matt Reed<\/a> have discussed recently around the delay of competency-based education guidance from the feds: how do you construct financial aid systems around something that looks very different from a credit-hour system that is the basis for the current federal financial-aid system?<\/p>\n<p>But despite those barriers, the construction of an ecosystem is how innovative higher education has to proceed &#8212;\u00a0while many Americans have been and remain autodidacts, our history is of educational institutions and educational ecosystems. ((For a history of autodidacticism, see Joseph Kett&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Pursuit of Knowledge under Difficulties<\/em>. I wonder if any of the authors promoting unbundling have read Kett&#8217;s history.)) Even when we have independent systems of learning, they often develop ecosystems, what my colleagues James and Elisabeth Gee call <a href=\"http:\/\/jamespaulgee.com\/pdfs\/Affinity%20Spaces.pdf\">nurturing affinity spaces<\/a>.
