{"id":808,"date":"2006-12-15T05:57:50","date_gmt":"2006-12-15T09:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=808"},"modified":"2006-12-15T05:57:50","modified_gmt":"2006-12-15T09:57:50","slug":"new-commission-on-the-skills-of-the-american-workforce-old-hat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=808","title":{"rendered":"&quot;New&quot; Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce, Old Hat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/12\/15\/education\/15school.html?ex=157680000&amp;en=70578c6c8fdecd67&amp;ei=5124&amp;partner=permalink&amp;exprod=permalink\">buzz this weekend<\/a> about&nbsp;the report of the <a href=\"http:\/\/skillscommission.org\/\">New Commission on the Skills of the American Workforce<\/a> will probably damp down fairly quickly, for a few reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s so mind-bogglingly &#8220;new&#8221; and &#8220;fresh&#8221; that it has the same title as what produced <em>America&#8217;s Choice<\/em> with &#8220;New&#8221; in front of it.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s so mind-bogglingly &#8220;new&#8221; and &#8220;fresh&#8221; that the thing that interests <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eduwonk.com\/archives\/2006_12_10_archive.html#116610981863634316\">Eduwonk Andy Rotherham<\/a> is that it doesn&#8217;t call for new funding.<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s a huge inertia in the system that tends to bury redesign efforts (see Tyack and Cuban&#8217;s <em>Tinkering toward Utopia<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>The Democrats&#8217; political motivations will <em>still<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shermandorn.com\/mt\/archives\/000710.html\">drive things<\/a> in very different directions.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s being released close to the weekend in the middle of December.<\/li>\n<li>To read the whole thing, you have to pay for it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s right: the well-funded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncee.org\">National Center on Education and the Economy<\/a> only has the executive summary online, and you have to pay $20 for the whole thing. In an age when everyone and her or his brother release PDF reports for the whole world to download and read, Marc Tucker is using a very <em>old<\/em> technique to push a radical redesign.
