{"id":834,"date":"2007-01-07T09:29:17","date_gmt":"2007-01-07T13:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/shermandorn.com\/wordpress\/?p=834"},"modified":"2007-01-07T09:29:17","modified_gmt":"2007-01-07T13:29:17","slug":"lack-of-perspective-at-the-american-historical-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shermandorn.com\/?p=834","title":{"rendered":"Lack of perspective at the American Historical Association"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday was eventful at the <a href=\"http:\/\/hnn.us\/articles\/33409.html#Day3\">third day of the American Historical Association annual meeting in Atlanta<\/a> but not in a good way.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Police arrested Tufts faculty member Felipe Fernandez-Armesto for <em>jaywalking<\/em> and put him in jail until the prosecutors dropped charges, embarrassed.<\/li>\n<li>The AHA business meeting failed to approve a strongly-worded measure opposing campus speech codes and approved only a watered-down resolution &#8220;free speech zones.&#8221; <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So it looks like Atlanta police think jaywalking is a worse crime than murder and those who attended the AHA business meeting think that the only type of speech restrictions they needed to take a stand on yesterday were so-called &#8220;free speech zones.&#8221;<br \/>\nIs there something about Atlanta this weekend that saps one&#8217;s judgment?
