Wild and woolly week

Moammar Gaddafi and Steve Jobs overthrown, earthquake on the East Coast, hurricane barreling towards Cape May, and the Rays finally beat the Tigers for the first time this year. Amazing!

Early this evening, my daughter and I board a plane heading in the general direction of her college… and where Hurricane Irene is headed. The weather has caused a few schedule adjustments, and I hope nothing too much more for us. Goodnight, Irene; nothing personal but I don’t want to see you in my dreams.

It’s the end of the first week of classes here at USF, and I am completely exhausted (today is also the end of my third week of being a department chair). Quite happy, as the department is now into the fall transition with only a few bumps and scrapes, and some of my slight nudges for the semester have done more than I expected. Since we were without an office manager for three months (our new office manager started last week), I consider this a raging success on the order of “everything will get done, if not quite yesterday.” I have even figured out how to close a B30 Keurig on my Solofill cups. While I have never used a surfboard, the feeling I have had for the past 10 days is pretty much what I assume it feels like to be surfing on the inside of a very long wave face that just keeps moving along: keeping my head out of the water and retaining my balance are triumphs in themselves.

Yes, I know that if you read my blog, you are wondering when I will have time to comment on current events. For a few more weeks at least, the answer is “not soon enough.”
