(Note that this view is consistent with his being upset at Israel’s apparent violations of international law, a view he shares with military-history blogger Mark Grimsley.) • Kevin Carey wants evidence of student learning to move the higher-ed marketplace, in an essay in the Washington Monthly issue on college rankings. I agree with him on the value of the NSSE, but how can the market—all about individual and private outcomes—promote social goals that aren’t the sum of tastes? The argument there is romantic, nostalgic, even magical thinking.

There. I’ve always wanted the excuse to have a title something like that. (Yes, I know enough people who identify themselves as Wicca to know that Kevin Carey is not a member of his local coven…)
